Composed at the request of Madame de Maintenon (1635-1719) for her damsels of Saint-Cyr, Esther was created on 26 January 1689 as part of the Royal House of Saint-Louis in Saint-Cyr. To reward him for the quality of his piece, Louis XIV named Jean Racine (1639-1699), who was already his historiographer, "Gentilhomme ordinaire de sa Majesté".
Magnificent specimen in doubled morocco.
