The History of the Norman conquest of England, its causes and consequences to the present day, published in 1825, was one of the best "long sellers" of the 19th century - some fifteen editions and a translation into English as early as 1826. Auréolé by the press, the 30-year-old author, Augustin THIERRY, receives a visit from Chateaubriand and is offered a royal pension. He reworked his work in 1830 and retouched it until the day before his death in 1856. In a bold style illuminated by the search for the "local colour" and associated with a manifest erudition, this epic of winners and losers unfolds between the 9th and the end of the 12th century. Based on his mastery of the English language and on the chronicles published on both sides of the Channel, the historian defends a thesis up to obsession: the "last" great territorial conquest that took place in the western part of Europe "makes it possible to understand the "political conquests (or revolutions)" that punctuate the history of Europe, from the Middle Ages of the communes to the French Revolution.

In good condition.
