Bound in full brown chagrin. 18.5 x 13 cm. Long spine decorated with fleurons. Borders framed with roulettes. Bookplate on first white endpaper and old handwritten bookplate on verso of title page. Title page restored (filling). Old, controlled moisture ring in margins of most leaves. Minor worm damage in lower margin, with no effect on text. A few annotations. Small margins. Horizontal tear 5cm long in middle of p. 71. The last 3 leaves and p. 65-66 have been reproduced from a later edition (probably the 1692 edition). Texts in Béarnese Gascon.
VERY RARE SECOND EDITION, published by Millanges in Bordeaux (Montaigne and de Monluc's first publisher) after the 1553 edition published by Morpain, of which only 1 copy is known (Bayonne media library). Of the 1576 edition, only 4 copies are preserved in public collections: 2 at the BNF, 1 at the Mazarine and 1 at the Pau media library.
After the territory became part of the French domain in 1512, the Coutume de Soule, drawn up in 1520 at the request of François I, established personal freedom and free use of the vast common lands: moors, forests and mountains.
