Third edition, reviewed and corrected by the author. Increased:1° The notice of two unpublished Arabic manuscripts which provide new and curious details on the history, population, income, taxes, arts of Egypt, as well as on the military state, administration, etiquette of the Mamlouks Cherkasse, and on the regular organization of the post office to the pigeons; 2° An exact picture of all the Levant trade, taken from the registers of the Marseille Chamber of Commerce; 3° Considerations on the war of the Russians and Turks, published in 1784; 4° Two new engravings representing the pyramids and the sphinx, to which are attached the plates of Palmyra, Balbek, and three geographical maps all redone - Full marble basane binding. Smooth spines richly decorated with golden mosaics, red title and tomaison pieces. Gilded frame on the boards. Slightly blunt corners. All edges gilt. Fresh interior. With 3 cards, 1 plan and 4 folded planks. Binding signed COLAS. Lower jaw of volume 2 a little split but without fragility. Small tear on title page of Volume 1 with small missing.
This third edition (EO: 1789) is in fact a new edition because Volney had redesigned and completed his text, added plates. It is quite uncommon, whereas the next edition of 1807, which covers it entirely, is much more common.
Beautiful set, fabulously bound.
