Green half-marrow binding with corners. Smooth spine richly decorated with arabesques and animal motifs, set with red morocco florets. Top edge gilt. Original paper covers and spine bound in. Binding signed CHAMPS-STROOBANTS. Interior with small wetting. With a preface by Honoré Bonhomme. Illustrated with drawings (letters, banners, vignettes out of text) by Emile Adan engraved with etching by Le Rat, including the frontispiece portrait.
Florian is generally considered as the second French fabulist, after La Fontaine, which he equals with elegance and sensitivity. This is one of 20 copies on Whatman paper containing the double proof prints.
