Contreplats with double framing in red and blue morocco and three gilded fillets. Light blue moire lining and endpapers. Covers preserved. HANDSOME EDITION. One of 75 numbered copies on Japon impérial signed by the illustrator, second large paper, illustrated with two suites and a decomposition of a plate.

16 watercolors, including 15 hors-texts, by Joseph Hémard, engraved on copper by Felzers and printed in color on the register. An original signed watercolor drawing by Albert Guillaume is included.

A fine copy in a superb binding by Cretté.

First performed by Courteline on February 18, 1895, Les gaîtés de l'Escadron did not go down well in the poisonous climate of the Dreyfus Affair, with some members of society resenting yet another indictment of the army and barrack life.

Superb copy
