Zola published this brochure at the time of the private exhibition organised by Manet in May 1867 in Place de l'Alma, on the fringe of the Universal Exhibition. The writer's aim was to defend the painting by his friend, Olympia, whose presentation at the Salon two years earlier had caused a scandal. It is known that it was Caillebotte who finally got the Olympia, which he considered essential in the history of art, accepted in the Louvre.
