ORIGINAL EDITION printed in 1500 copies. A first-issue copy, with title and cover correctly dated.

The work combines two essays published in the Revue contemporaine on January 15 and 31, 1860. Although Baudelaire had only limited experience of hashish, he was a great opium consumer.
