Leather-edged slipcases. Binding full of dark brown sorrow. Dishes decorated with a central rosette surrounded by a frame with decorated angles. Spine nicely decorated in the same style. Pink moiré silk linings surrounded by golden fillets and corner flags on the same morocco. Guards of the same silk. All edges gilt. Original paper covers and spine bound in. Very beautiful romantic pastiche binding made by G. MERCIER suc of his father 1926 .

FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION, adorned with one hundred vignettes in the text by Baron, Janet-Lange, Gavarni, French and Marckl, plus one on the title, engraved on steel by Brunellière, Nargeot, Langlois, etc., in first print. This is the fifth edition of La Peau de chagrin, published seven years after the original and with more than four hundred variants compared to the previous edition (1835).
Copy of the first print, with the title on the skeleton, the gardener's vignette p. 301 and the various remarks relating to the text pointed out by Carteret and Brivois.

Complete portraits of pages 149 and 287 on China applied on vellum and the subscription prospectus.

Copy enriched with a  series of 99 (out of 101) vignettes on strong paper (with title for the 1st and without those of pp. 365 and 401) .

 

Very good condition in a decorative binding.
