"Adolphe tells of the inexorable breakdown of a love relationship. After seducing Ellénore out of vanity rather than love, Adolphe is unable to break up or love. His indecision, between sincerity and bad faith, as well as a kind of sadism mixed with compassion, will precipitate the race to the abyss of this fatal couple. Having inadvertently escaped Constant's pen to entertain himself with his sentimental setbacks with Charlotte de Hardenberg and Madame de Staël (this is a certain conception of the genesis of the text), Adolphe is a masterpiece of the analytical novel: a "fairly true story of the misery of the human heart".
