Son of an artillery officer, Kléber Haedens studied at the national military prytanée in La Flèche, then joined ESC Bordeaux before opting for journalism. A member of the French Action in the 1930s, he contributed to numerous publications including Aux Écoutes de Paul Lévy, Je suis partout, L'Insurgé (with Maurice Blanchot, Jean-Pierre Maxence and Thierry Maulnier), Combats (official organ of the French Militia during the Second World War) and the daily L'Action française (sports and literary columns).
It was also during these times of war that he produced A young snake.
