"While Boris Vian was working as artistic director at two record companies, Philips and then Fontana, he was asked by France Roche, who was working at the time at Amiot publishing house, to write a book on a subject of his choice. Hesitant on the subject, but having cashed in the advance, Boris Vian asked one of his former neighbours, the novelist Yves Gibeau, to launch a major survey on variety criticism and write the book together. Vian sent out a series of questionnaires to the most famous music-hall artists, but he did not get involved in the writing process and so Boris Vian wrote the book En avant la zizique... et par ici les gros sous on his own, deciphering the workings of the music world in a tone that is half pedagogical and half pamphleteering.
