Farewell, brightness is an autobiographical narrative novel by Jorge Semprun that takes place during the period before his departure to the concentration camp of Buchenwald. It recounts the first years of adolescence and exile, from the time the Semprún family landed in Bayonne until the outbreak of the Second World War.
The title of Semprun's story is borrowed from the first part of the second line of Charles Baudelaire's poem Chant d'automne: " Soon we will plunge into the cold darkness; Farewell, brightness of our too short summers!
