Félicité, an exclusive mother, and Fernand, a submissive son, form a close-knit couple. But Fernand gives in to the advances of his neighbor, Mathilde, and marries her, despite his mother's threats. Eventually, he returns to live with his mother, while Mathilde suffers a miscarriage and dies alone.
