Founder of the magazine La Wallonie (to which Gide was a contributor) in 1886, Albert Mockel (1866-1945) was an early Walloon autonomist. A disciple of Mallarmé, he is notably the author of the collection Chantefable un peu naïve (1891) and the critical essays Propos de littérature (1894), Stéphane Mallarmé, un héros (1898), Charles Van Lerberghe (1904) and Émile Verhaeren, poète de l'énergie (1917). He contributed to numerous magazines, including La Plume and Mercure de France. His correspondence with André Gide was published in 1975.
