This is the story of a young woman, Isabelle, who is trying to break through as an actress in Paris. She's having trouble finding work and begins to lose hope when she meets a mysterious man who offers her a part in a new film. The film is a huge success and Isabelle becomes a star overnight. However, she soon discovers that fame isn't all it's cracked up to be. She is constantly hounded by the paparazzi, and her private life comes under scrutiny. She feels increasingly isolated from her friends and family. As Isabelle's life begins to unravel, she begins to question everything she thought she knew about herself and the world around her. She realizes that she has lost sight of her true dreams and desires, and must find a way to reclaim her life before it's too late.
The novel was adapted for the screen in 1976, starring Catherine Deneuve.
