ORIGINAL EDITION of André Gide's first book. Judging the edition to be incorrect, Gide had it thrown into the rubbish heap, with only around 70 press copies surviving. The present edition is the only one to include Pierre Louys' notice. Gide wanted to pass off this account, inspired by his relationship with his cousin Madeleine, as the diary of a deceased person. To this end, he asked his friend Pierre Louys to write a notice attesting to the authenticity of the diary. Only in the first edition does this notice, signed P.C., appear.
Enriched with a long autograph letter from Pierre Louys to André Gide, dated February 2, 1893, in which he talks about Goethe's Werther, which he has just finished reading.
