Closely involved in a criminal case in the early 1960s, Jean, the narrator of L'Herbe des nuits, tries to clarify the circumstances that led him to frequent the gang at L'Unic Hôtel in Montparnasse and a certain Dannie, with whom he was then in love. L'Herbe des nuits distils a detective story atmosphere, but does not follow the codes. We're not in the shoes of a gangster, or a cop, but in the shoes of a character on the fringes, launched into an investigation that is more poetic than detective.
