"To the friend P. Stock, his devoted J.K. Huysmans," on a cover page.

STOCK on a page in-4 at the head of the editor: Huysmans asks him for money ("Try to take the cords from your chaplains and give me money"), complains about the weather ("We would be much better off if there were no strangers to the Basque of your clothes"), and mentions a request for a translation by the Oblate.

The final part of the conversion trilogy - after On the Road and The Cathedral - The Oblate is the crowning achievement of Huysmans' spiritual thought. It is the last great novel by the author who made his profession of vows as an Oblate in 1901 at the monastery of Ligugé.
