"Shortly before being sent to the front, after a voluntary engagement, Guillaume Apollinaire met Lou. It's passion, it's tornado, it's beyond crazy love! This passion will be far from being only sentimental. It will also reach carnal heights that will obsess the poet abandoned in his trenches among the troop, the shells whistling over his head and the dead marking his days. The absence of the beloved only fuels the need and idealization of the beloved. Apollinaire is more than unhappy, cut off from this woman he feels as necessary as the oxygen he breathes. His passion will take on an absolute, total, haunting allure!
Unfortunately, Lou is not Penelope, far from it! She loves, yes, but she finds it difficult to conceive a bed otherwise than furnished, and the absent one is quite wrong... Her fidelity will therefore be quite relative, as will her readiness to respond to the fiery missives of our William. He can only suffer more and the lover who suffers often loves even more madly.
These poems dedicated to Lou are an expression of his feelings and carnal obsessions, but also a description of what he sees and what surrounds him. The daily presence of death and disability could only stir his passions.
This collection is superb!"
