A picaresque tale, with stories "detachable from one another", the story of John Cooper of Albany is as valuable for its content as for the circumstances surrounding its writing, begun in 1940, resumed in 1942 and marred by losses. Of the planned 100 chapters, only 47 survive, some lost, others never written. Despite this, the hero retains his unity and wanders through the adventures, despite the gaps and jumps in the narrative.

A very fresh copy
