"Barny, a young woman whose husband died in the war, lives with her daughter in a provincial town. It's the Occupation period. Barny, to subsist, is forced to do a tiring job; she has little to eat. One day, she walks into a church and goes to the confessional. Instead of confessing, she tells the priest a few incongruities. The latter, Léon Morin, interested in this rebellious and agnostic spirit, invites Barny to come and see him at home. Little by little, in the face of Léon Morin's open-mindedness, which destroys the usual prejudices about religion, he finds himself touched by grace. Parallel to this part, the book largely evokes the questions of everyone's behavior during the terror instituted by the German occupiers: should we help the Jews? Must we try everything to survive? What about the Maquis?"
