"This book by Jean Forton marks a new stage in the writer's thinking. We find here a theme that is dear to him: man is perpetually in the temptation of dreaming, of sleeping; every time life hurts him, he looks for that marvellous escape represented by the imagination. But here the theme becomes more precise, because Uncle Leon, far from fleeing reality, pursues it with constancy, without being able to reach it. Until the moment of his death, he will fight against this kind of fog that prevents him from looking things in the face, and that he will not be able to tear. Throughout the book, the drama rises in a crescendo without weakness, leaving the reader with an impression of tragic grandeur.
Uncle Leon's heart anguish
symbolizes the anguish of the entire human condition.
Abstract: Uncle Leon is still young, weak, sick and, even in the eyes of children, is considered a simple-minded person. He lives with a certain Felicie, whose victim he is, because he didn't know how to be her lover. This woman, very beautiful but a little crazy, and with whom he is in love, overwhelms Uncle Leon with violent scenes, sudden tantrums and without reason. But little by little, the young man grew apart from Felicie. To help him in his attempt, he has the friendship of Gutierez, a boxing champion, and the love of Marie-Louise, a nightclub singer. Uncle Leon could hope to live a quiet and uneventful life at last, if he wasn't unfortunately gifted with a strange talent. He guesses, almost for sure, the winner of a boxing match. This precious talent becomes notorious and reaches the ears of a certain Chabou, an unscrupulous man greedy for money, who drags Uncle Léon into a dishonest adventure. That's where the drama comes from".
