This book is a tribute by the author to the nineteenth-century French writer Charles Fourier: "out of the thirty-two periods he foresees for the history of mankind, he describes only the first nine. To illustrate this strange imagination, we wanted to continue it, and complete, on the same lines, this picture." His work, apparently ahead of its time and yet incomplete, represented an irresistible challenge that Michel Butor did not fail to meet.
