Abstract: "A young soldier, the narrator, over forty years ago, lives with his comrades a night of fear and premonition, at the bottom of a pillbox. Here it is, a little later, sailing, in the middle of the war, towards Norway, on board a boat slowed down by a very singular damage... Then the story, five short stories, each of which closes in on itself, transports us to a fictional country that providentially replaces or superimposes itself on Normandy, at the very moment when the German army is storming there. Taken prisoner, our young soldier will find himself in the presence, on the other side of the Rhine, of the "father of barrels", a semi-imaginary character in whom Germany is already redeeming itself. We will find her, also humanized, in the character of a dying or already dead "dean" that our young "hero" walks in a burning city, in the middle of the Red Army celebrating, with lots of vodka, his victory and the feast of May 1st. War has many faces..."
