This collection marks the transition between Aragon's Surrealist and Communist periods, and contains the opening line of the famous poem Front rouge, which marked the break with André Breton. The poet calls for a radical transformation of society, advocating revolution as the only way to bring about a fairer world. The collection provoked mixed reactions within the Surrealist movement. André Breton wrote a "tract" in defense of Aragon, but L'Humanité disowned the poem.
