Embarked in 1866 for Indochina, Jules Boissière (1863-1897), a colonial civil servant and disciple of Mallarmé, took up opium like his colleagues. His Propos d'un intoxiqué is the diary of a smoker tormented by "perfidious and sweet sensations", the joy of being taken and the desire to quit.
