Jack Kerouac forms with the writer William Burroughs and the poet Allen Ginsberg a band that constitutes the core of what will be called the "Beat generation", a movement of young artists revolted and avant-garde, in rupture with the materialism of the American society. Kerouac himself defines On the Road as "the novel of two guys who hitchhike to California, looking for something they don't really find in the end, who get lost on the road and come back to their starting point, full of hope for something else.
