Via Mala is a novel by the Swiss writer John Knittel.
Summary: "The Lauretz family lives miserably in Switzerland in the canton of Yeff. The father, Jonas, a drunk, violent, and unfaithful man, ruins the family sawmill. Anna, his daughter, works as a waitress, Niclaus, the son, runs the sawmill with a worker Jory Wagner. Sylvelie, the youngest, serves the painter Mathias Lauters with dedication. At Mathias' death, Sylvelie inherits his châlet, his paintings and a large sum of money. Jory, Niclaus, Anna and his mother decide to kill Jonas and make the body disappear. Sylvelie, back from Zurich, is informed and keeps quiet. The court rules that the case is dismissed.
Sylvelie meets and marries Andréas de Richenau, a young man from a good family. Over the years, this young magistrate became an examining magistrate and was entrusted with the cases of the previous judge. He noted numerous irregularities in the Lauretz case, sensed the truth and eventually got the family to confess. He has a case of conscience. What will he choose between his family ties and his duty?
A dramatic and bitter saga in the heart of a mountain family".
