Beautiful frontispiece portrait of the author. Binding full red basane. Spine with raised bands decorated with gilded fillets and cold decoration. Dishes stamped with a cold framing decoration. All edges gilt. Gilded framed lace on the inner fillings. Binding signed THOUVENIN. The interior is very fresh.
Very beautiful copy in an elegant binding. Massillon's sermons (1663-1742) are only individual interviews conducted for the King's instruction before he came of age, and Joseph Thouvenin, a student of François Bozerian, is one of the most prolific bookbinders of his time. He is one of the three most important bookbinders of the 19th century and of the Restoration in particular, with René Simier and Jean-Georges Purgold.
