This is a UNIQUE AND REMARKABLE work that took Jeanne Besnard-Fortin several years to create. She is as much a historian as a figurative painter.

Jeanne Besnard-Fortin tells us about her work: "For me, it is only a question of guiding the reader through the images, of placing him or her, through anecdotes, in the atmosphere of the fashion worn at the different times, in a word, with its "climate".

Given the abundance of illustrations, I did not feel I had to lose myself in long and tedious descriptions.

I have limited myself to giving a few details about the shapes of the hats, the fabrics used, and the colours particular to each period. However, in order to extend the scope of this study, I have described a few hairstyles that will be easy to reconstruct, but which, more often than not, do not appear on the plates, the typical hairstyle, the one that avoids confusion being generally represented.

Moreover, the head being the support of the hat, I have also given some models of these hairstyles which were always designed to adapt to the fashion of the headgear, and finally, to provide in the text, details on make-up, perfumes, and to give, at the same time, recipes of beauty employed by some of our most illustrious predecessors.

An unpublished history of French hairstyling, from the Gauls to the Third Republic, with over 1,000 original drawings.
