Framing at La Du Seuil on the boards. Double thread on the cuts. Inner lace. Top edge gilt. Binding signed CANAPE. The text is inserted on each page in a colour illustration with a decorative border, several full-page colour illustrations, including chapter headings. Introduction and notes by Charles Marcilly and printed by Charles Gillot.
This is the first book printed in several colours by Charles Gillot using photo-engraving, using the "gillotage" technique. The layout is innovative, the frames overflow, the plans overlap. The illustration of the work is of a spectacular richness, architectural motifs, costumes, weapons are finely drawn.
When it was published, Octave Uzanne considered it "the most beautiful book of the century". It is a reference example of the new luxury book that combines technical prowess with the emergence of a new bibliophilic style. Disciple of Violet the Duke, Eugène Grasset spent more than two years drawing the boards for the four Aymon sons.
One of the jewels of the illustrated Art Nouveau books in a superb binding in perfect condition.
