In a case. Full Jansenist green morocco binding. Nervous spine. Red morocco lining set with a golden castor and decorated with laurel leaves and nets forming a golden frame, dark green silk guards. All edges gilt. Binding signed Marius MICHEL. Spine slightly passed.
This short story, which Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870) placed on the plot during the imperial wars, first appeared in 1829 in La Revue française before being included in Mosaïque, a collection of short stories published in 1833.
Unique copy printed on vellum especially for bibliophile Paul Reveilhac .
Enriched with 15 original drawings (a frontispiece and 14 vignettes in the text (including a small portrait of Mérimée jeune at the end of the preface)) representing military subjects specially composed in Indian ink for this copy by Alphonse Lalauze, some enhanced with washes. Son of the engraver Adolphe Lalauze, Alphonse Lalauze (1872-1936) was the pupil of the painter Édouard Detaille, whose military scenes had made him famous...[nbsp
]He illustrated texts of a historical nature of the Duke of Aumale, Balzac or even the Duke of Broglie... The text is preceded by a preface signed P[aul] R[eveilhac], addressed to the young illustrator. Are attached at the end of the volume :
- l' frontispiece sketch and 4 pen drawings enhanced with Indian ink washes ;
- un Indian ink drawing ;
- 7 graphite sketches taken from Indian ink washes ;
- 3 pen drawings enhanced with watercolour colours.
All completed drawings are signed or monogrammed and dated 1891 or 1892 .
