Henri Barbusse's FIRST ROMAN:
A thirty-year-old man, jaded by life, finds a job in a bank in Paris. He's moving into a boarding house. In the darkness of his room, he noticed a crack in the wall opening onto the next room. He then began to observe the various occupants of the car.
